Arguably the single most important preparation on the one handed backhand is bringing the shoulder back. I always say show your back to your opponent, but this is as good.

This is a very relaxed backhand, and is not as good an example of this idea as I would like. I was just hitting half speed backhands for video analysis. You can see how the entire stroke is in the shoulders, and how the more the shoulder rotates back, the more pace you can put on the ball.
To me this is the first priority in hitting a one hander. First turn the shoulder, this take the racquet back. Then you can move your feet into the correct position (if you have time). I know this sounds blasphemous, but there you go.
Another small point to make in this backhand. As I bring the racquet back my off hand goes back with the racquet. I recommend this. This gets the back shoulder back (the Muster tip) and the hand tends to hold the racquet down and ready for the low to high swing.
