A MORE POWERFUL SERVE |

This position is what one coach of mine (many moons ago) called the Sky Point. Notice in this animation of the Pete Sampras serve, he arrives at the same position as the logo. I have paused it at that point for emphasis. It is a definite pose that nearly all good servers, no matter how funky their service motion seems, arrive at. My coach said the serve is in two parts: The first is tossing the ball and getting ready to hit it. That's when you achieve this pose. The second is the actual swing, and striking the ball. At this "SkyPoint" you are pointing at the ball (as it is tossed up) and you point your hip forward. The tip here is in the position of the hips at the "Sky Point." The front is higher than the back. Then the front part comes down, snaps around and the upper body follows. This small action (emphasizing the hip motion) can greatly improve your serve power and consistency. |
